Luo Brothers

(Chinese , b. 1963 )

The Luo Brothers are responsible for some of the most provocative and renowned Chinese contemporary art.  Luo Weidong, (b. 1963), Luo Weiguo, (b. 1964) and Luo Weibing, (b. 1972), are all accomplished artists skilled in the traditional craft-making techniques, live in Beijing, and collaborate on their paintings.  Their political pop art contrasts their childhood years during the Cultural Revolution with today’s political climate and its developing capitalism. In the series “Welcome to the World’s Famous Brands”, the artists combine the golden rays of the Oriental sun and communist iconography – Mao’s Red Army – with Western symbols and products used by contemporary Chinese. It is thought that the artists use the chubby faces of the children as a commentary on society’s out of control gluttony and a mockery of the superficial vision of modernized China.
